16 Preparatory and Primary schools participated in the inaugural TPDCo Tourism Quiz. The Tourism Product Development Company Limited (TPDCo) with support from the Ministry of Tourism and its agencies, the Tourism Enhancement Fund, Jamaica Vacations and the Jamaica Tourist Board, implemented the competition.  The competition is endorsed by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information

The quiz competition was created to introduce grades 4-6 students to tourism, as part of efforts to increase awareness of the sector to the target group. The quiz also serves as a mechanism to expose students, as early as possible to the career possibilities that tourism offers. This is in keeping with the Ministry of Tourism’s 5 pillars of tourism growth, particularly Human Capital Development.

The schools were selected from the six resort areas of Jamaica, and categorized into Western and Eastern zones. The western zone comprised Montego Bay, Negril and Mandeville, while Kingston, Portland, Ocho Rios and Trelawny made up the latter group.

Along with tourism related information, the students’ knowledge was tested using core areas such as Mathematics, English Language, Integrated Science and Social Studies.

Winning schools will be given the opportunity to enjoy and benefit from cash prizes, gift vouchers, passes to all-inclusive resorts and attractions such as Beaches Resorts, Hyatta Ziva, Dolphin Cove, Mystic Mountain and tours of heritage sites such as Devon House. Lunch and tour on board the Allure of the Seas cruise ship, stationery items from Sangster’s Book Store, Team Jamaica training scholarships and the TPDCo championship Trophy are among other prizes.
