Why the Return of the Tourism Service Excellence Awards Matters Now

If you have been hearing more about the Tourism Service Excellence Awards (TSEA) lately, you might be wondering: Why now? Why bring back an awards programme that has been absent for several years?

The answer is actually quite simple. Sometimes, the timing is just right to celebrate resilience, recognize excellence, and remind ourselves that people remain at the heart of Jamaica’s tourism success story.

Picking Up Where We Left Off

Many of us remember the uncertainty that swept across the world in 2020. The tourism industry, one of Jamaica’s most important economic pillars, was among the sectors hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Travel came to a standstill, borders closed, and plans across the industry had to be put on hold.

The Tourism Service Excellence Awards was one of those plans.

In fact, preparations for the 2020 awards were almost complete when the decision was made to close the country in response to the pandemic. The event was just days away. Like many other activities during that period, the awards had to be postponed indefinitely.

Now, six years later, Jamaica’s tourism sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience. Visitor arrivals have rebounded, businesses have adapted, and tourism workers have continued to show the professionalism and warmth that make Jamaica a destination of choice. The return of TSEA in 2026 is about finishing a journey that was interrupted and celebrating an industry that refused to give up.

Celebrating the People Behind the Experience

When visitors think about Jamaica, they often remember our beaches, mountains, cuisine, and attractions. But ask many of them what truly stands out, and they will tell you it was the people they encountered along the way.

The friendly hotel employee who anticipated their needs. The attraction guide who made history come alive. The transportation provider who ensured a safe and comfortable journey. The restaurant team that delivered exceptional service with a smile.

These are the experiences that visitors carry home with them.

That is why the Tourism Service Excellence Awards is so important. It shines a spotlight on the men, women and organizations whose commitment to outstanding service helps define Jamaica’s tourism brand every day.

The return of TSEA comes at a critical time for another reason. The industry continues to grow, and with growth comes the need to continuously raise service standards.

Recognition plays a powerful role in achieving that goal.

When excellence is celebrated, it inspires others and encourages organizations to invest in staff development, and industry stakeholders to keep striving for higher standards. In this way, TSEA becomes more than a gala event. It becomes a catalyst for continuous improvement across the sector.

As the Ministry of Tourism’s highest recognition programme for service excellence, the awards also send a clear message: exceptional service matters, and those who deliver it deserve to be recognized.

The Chosen Gems of Jamaica

This year’s awards, scheduled for October 31 at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, will be held under the theme “The Chosen Gems of Jamaica.” The theme could not be more fitting. Jamaica’s greatest tourism asset has always been its people. Our culture, hospitality, creativity, and genuine warmth are what transform a vacation into a memorable experience. So, Why TSEA matters now? Because this is the moment to honour the people who’ve continuously carried Jamaica’s tourism through uncertainty and challenging times.  Let’s celebrate the excellence driving our tourism growth today and remind the world that our chosen gems are not only found in our landscapes, but in the service, spirit and pride of our people.
