The historic Catadupa Railway Station in St. James came alive on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, as the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) officially launched the Catadupa Heritage and Eco Tours. This initiative, part of TPDCo’s Tourism Cluster Development Initiative, seeks to preserve the legacy of National Hero Samuel Sharpe and promote the rich cultural and natural heritage of the Catadupa community.
The project, developed over two years with the support of TPDCo, has transformed the Catadupa Tourism Cluster into a tour company offering authentic community experiences. Hon. Homer Davis, Minister without Portfolio, Office of the Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for Southern St. James underscored the magnitude of such initiatives in boosting local economies and providing unique experiences for tourists. “The launch of this heritage tour could not happen at a better time, with the boom in tourism and the increasing demand for rural and heritage attractions. It’s not all about the hotels. To truly experience Jamaica and its culture, you have to visit areas like Catadupa.”
Minister Davis also highlighted the comprehensive Tour Guide training that community members underwent, led by TPDCo, resulting in their certification as tour guides. This ensures a high-quality experience for visitors. “I am committed to this initiative and will continue to advocate for its success. Maintaining economic buoyancy in Catadupa is crucial to preventing rural drift to urban centers. This project offers a pathway to community economic stability,” he added.
In his remarks, Mr. Desmond Saunders Jr., Community Tourism Manager at TPDCo, emphasized the importance of community involvement. “The Catadupa Heritage and Eco Tours represents a significant step forward in our efforts to develop local tourism products. This initiative showcases the vibrant culture and history of Catadupa, providing economic opportunities for local residents.”
Ms. Claudette Glegg, Chairperson of the Catadupa Tourism Cluster, expressed her gratitude for the support received. “We are immensely grateful for the dedication and hard work of everyone involved in this project. The transformation we have witnessed is truly remarkable, and we are excited to share our community’s heritage and natural beauty with visitors.”
The Catadupa Heritage and Eco Tours celebrates the area’s historical significance, including its connection to Samuel Sharpe, a national hero born in the Catadupa Mountains who played a pivotal role in the Emancipation War of 1831-32. The tour promises breathtaking views, cultural performances, and great local food, creating a memorable experience for all.
