Minister of Tourism, Honourable Edmund Bartlett, has hailed the Tourism Product Development Company’s (TPDCo) recent “Craft with a Difference” event as a transformative celebration of Jamaica’s artistic heritage. Speaking at the event held in the second city of Montego Bay, the Minister lauded the initiative for its role in showcasing the nation’s cultural treasures and uplifting the artisans who contribute to the unique identity of Jamaica’s tourism product.
“These honourees represent the pinnacle of creativity and dedication,” said Minister Bartlett. “Their contributions have not only enriched Jamaica’s cultural identity but have also played a vital role in enhancing our tourism product. It is through their exceptional craftsmanship that Jamaica continues to captivate the world. This event underscores the value of our cultural heritage as a cornerstone of our tourism industry.”
The event’s highlight was the recognition of distinguished artisans who have significantly contributed to Jamaica’s creative landscape. Citations and plaques were presented by the Honourable Minister of Tourism to this year’s honourees: Scheed Cole as well as Ian and Tamika Willians. Their works, which have left an indelible mark on the nation’s craft and tourism sectors, were featured in a specially curated museum exhibit, offering attendees an immersive experience of their exceptional craftsmanship.
Executive Director of TPDCo, Mr. Wade Mars, also commended the honourees for their remarkable impact. “Through their artistry and commitment, these individuals have elevated Jamaican craft to an international standard,” he remarked. “TPDCo is proud to honour their work and to showcase how their creativity contributes to sustainable tourism and cultural preservation.”
The event provided attendees with opportunities to engage directly with the honourees’ work through the bespoke museum exhibition. The collection included intricate carvings and contemporary adaptations of traditional Jamaican art forms. Visitors praised the exhibit for its innovative presentation and the chance to delve into the creative processes of Jamaica’s finest artisans.
TPDCo’s Craft with a Difference not only celebrated the artisans but also emphasised the importance of integrating culture and heritage into the tourism product. The initiative aligns with TPDCo’s mission to foster sustainable tourism development while preserving Jamaica’s cultural heritage.
As the curtains closed on this year’s event, attendees left inspired by the honourees’ ingenuity and the vibrant cultural showcase. TPDCo remains committed to nurturing Jamaica’s creative talent and ensuring that the nation’s cultural heritage continues to thrive on the global stage.
